Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), Postdoctoral researcher (80%), Laboratory of Landscape Development (LAND), School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC), Lausanne, Switzerland.

The role involves contributing to the laboratory's research on landscape development and renewable energy, focusing on their environmental, socio-economic, and policy aspects. My  research focuses on how EU and national policies  promote synergies and address trade-offs between renewable energy development and biodiversity conservation. I am also involved in teaching and supervision activities for the courses Urban Voids: Mind the Gap! and Design Project at the bachelor's and master's levels.

Research

Integrating biodiversity conservation into renewable energy development under the European Green Deal: A comparative analysis of national policies in three EU countries (with Beate Jessel) (work in progress)

Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association, Researcher, Barcelona, Spain.

The work involved supporting the implementation of EU-funded projects by carrying out data collection, analysis and economic policy research on sustainability and the environment. I led research for EMEA’s participation in ReForest (2022-2026), a project funded by Horizon Europe. It aims to enhance the uptake of agroforestry in Europe by fostering innovation, knowledge exchange, and providing new solutions to enable farmers to achieve multiple objectives such as food production, carbon sequestration and, biodiversity enhancement. The project is divided into eight work packages. EMEA leads WP5 on finance and policy and is in charge of the project’s co-creation and capitalisation strategy and actions (WP1). I was responsible for producing the project's deliverables, collaborating with partners, and building synergies with other projects and initiatives on agroforestry.

EU-project deliverables

• A sustainable financing scheme for agroforestry. D5.4 of ReForest (2024).
• Mapping report on agroforestry sector finance and policy 2. D5.2 of ReForest (2024).
• Interim assessment and report on networking impact. M3 of ReForest (2024).
• Mapping report on agroforestry sector finance and policy 1. D5.1 of ReForest (2023).
• Co-creation and knowledge capitalisation strategy. M1 and M2 of ReForest (2023).

I also contributed to the final phase of the Interreg MED Renewable Energy project, one of the eight MED Capitalisation Horizontal Projects of the Interreg Med Programme. The objective of the project was to drive an effective capitalisation of the Ecosystemic Transition Unit (ETU), a model designed to support rural and island communities in joining the energy transition in the Mediterranean.

In parallel to the EU projects, I wrote an empirical research paper examining the determinants of energy and material resources productivity.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Consultant, Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting (PMER) Unit, Geneva, Switzerland.

I worked as an independent consultant on two different projects:

First project (from February to April, 2022):

IFRC Europe Regional Office

I developed an endline survey questionnaire and indicators to measure progress against the Almaty Commitments, established at the 10th European Regional Conference held in Almaty in May 2018. The data was collected from National Societies in Europe and used to produce a quantitative analysis report, the results of which were presented at the 11th European Regional Conference. The conference took place from 26-28 April 2022 and measured progress against the Almaty commitments.

Hajdukovic, I. (2022). A quantitative analysis of the implementation of the Almaty Commitments in relation to the subthemes of the 10th European Regional Conference. Report to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

Second project (from June to July, 2022):

I conducted a country-level benchmark data analysis focused on the IFRC’s strategic priorities to support the IFRC’s unified planning process. Using data from the IFRC FDRS and UN OCHA Humanitarian Response Plans, the report compared the people reached by the National Societies’ activities and those targeted and in need in the corresponding sectors of the countries.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Data analyst, Federation-wide Databank and Reporting System (FDRS), PMER Unit, Geneva, Switzerland.

The main tasks consisted in supporting data collection, validation and analysis. I was responsible for covering the Africa and Europe and Central Asia regions. The work included collecting data on the activities of National Societies on an annual basis and the financial and programmatic indicators data relating to their response to COVID-19 on a quarterly basis. The data collected was analysed and used to produce the 2022 edition of the Everyone counts report, a flagship publication of the IFRC

The report is published now as: Federation-wide Databank and Reporting System (2022). Everyone counts 2022

World Trade Organisation, Internship, Trade and Environment Division, Geneva, Switzerland.

The main part of the work consisted in writing an empirical research paper assessing the impact of international trade on the price of solar photovoltaic modules. The research paper is published now as: Hajdukovic, I. (2022). The impact of international trade on the price of solar photovoltaic modules: empirical evidence. EconomiA, 23(1), 88-104.

I also carried out several activities in support of the division’s regular work, including research on trade and the circular economy, preparing briefs on conferences and policy dialogues, and drafting a broad range of communications materials.

I provided punctual assistance in constructing a database of mineral commodities for a research paper examining whether mineral commodities have become scarcer over the long term. The main tasks included data collection, manipulation and cleaning, conversion of units of measurement, and the development of visual and mechanical checks to identify outliers.

University of Oxford, Research assistant at the Institute for New Economic Thinking, Oxford, United Kingdom.

I provided punctual assistance on a research project that reviews the literature of the substitutability of natural capital with other forms of capital. The research project is published now as: Cohen, F., Hepburn, C. and Teytelboym, A. (2019). Is Natural Capital Really Substitutable?. Annual Review of Environment and Resources, 44, 425-448.

In the first part of the project, I analysed the methods employed in a wide array of econometric studies on the level of substitution between natural capital (namely materials and energy) and other forms of capital (e.g., capital and labour). I spotted several drawbacks in existing studies such as misspecification of functional forms, omitted variables bias, risk of measurement errors in specific variables, and simultaneity problems not dealt in the statistical estimation.

I also contributed to the second part of this project, which takes a different perspective and delves into two case studies: energy use in industry and land use in agricultural production. This part looks at techno-economic studies in economics, engineering and environmental science to assess the technical potential for substituting two physical inputs, energy and land, with labour and capital.
